Traditional Sasak Women's Clothing


Sasak Traditional Clothing: Clothes which is made, worn, and supported by the Sasak people.

Traditional Sasak Women's Clothing is influenced by various ethnics, such as; Malays, Javanese, Balinese, and Bugis. The influence of those various ethnics acculturated into Sasak Traditional Clothing. There are also variations that we could find based on the sub ethnic that characterize it. Due to the belief or religion of the Sasak people, traditional Sasak Clothing was adjusted to the rules of the religious ethics (the majority of the Sasak are Moslem). The use of Traditional Sasak Clothes is for activities related to the customs ceremonial or traditional events.
Traditional Sasak Clothing are different from Sasak arts clothing that allowed wearing “Sumping” (ear ornament, usually using flowers), black glasses, and goldish trinkets. In the provision of seminars and workshops in Traditional Sasak Women's Clothing which is attended by cultural practitioners and Sasak Culture Community peoples have agreed the basic guidelines of the Traditional Sasak Clothing.

Traditional Sasak Women's Clothing and their meanings:
- Pangkak: Crown on women in the form of gold ornament shaped like flowers, arranged in such a way between a bun.
- Tangkong: Clothing as a symbol of elegance, can be a “kebaya” outfit, made from materials in bright or dark colors of velvet or brocade fabric types. Avoided the use of models that show cleavage and transparent.
- Tongkak: A belt, fabrics wrapped around the waist as a symbol of fertility cover and devotion.
- Lempot: Form shawl / long patterned woven cloth that is draped on the left shoulder. As a symbol of affection.
- Kereng: Form of songket cloth wrapped from waist to ankle as a symbol of modesty, and fertility.
- Accessories: Gendit / “Pending” is a silver chain worn as a belt wrap, Onggar - onggar ( decorated with golden flowers tucked in the bun ) Jiwang / piercing ( earrings ), Suku / talen / ketip ( gold or silver coins made as pins), necklaces etc.
Note: The use of footwear is justified even though the original was not used. Footwear which may be used either in the form of slippers made of rubber or leather.
